Our Culture

It is OPG’s mission to create a better world – one rich with a spirit of abundance, innovation, compassion, and respect.

Our work is designed to facilitate deep human connections that form the basis of thriving workplaces and communities. Using our own office as a laboratory, we work alongside our clients to create extraordinary work cultures and to build momentum toward our common goal of a better world.

Our mission animates all we do at OPG. We believe that by striving to create an extraordinary work culture ourselves, we can share our learning and help others do the same. We know these efforts have profound ripple effects – they can spark meaningful positive changes in our communities and the world.

To help us achieve our mission, we look for and strive to cultivate the following competencies across our team:

  • Proactivity
  • Creativity
  • Desire to learn and grow
  • Collaboration and teamwork
  • Commitment to equity and justice
  • Conflict resolution
  • Courage

We all contribute to culture-building every day through actions big and small. Here is a snapshot of the activities and practices that help define the OPG culture:

  • The four-day workweek: After first piloting an experiment in which OPG staff tracked our individual circadian rhythms, we adopted a four-day workweek, which has been shown to increase productivity and has myriad other benefits.
  • Annual charrette: Each year, all standard operations at OPG shut down for a pre-determined period so staff can pursue a new project, innovation, or idea that furthers the mission and vision of the firm. In past charrettes, our firm has produced entire strategic plans, written complete books, and developed new service lines.
  • Transparency around finances and decision making: We share a financial dashboard with all staff that includes almost all the firm’s financial information except salaries. This is intended to help staff build their financial acumen and to make better decisions for OPG. We also strive to clearly articulate how and by whom any important decisions will be made for the organization.
  • Organizational norms: We have used “min specs” to develop a clear set of agreed-upon norms that guide our work together.

And more! Ask us about the gong, the open and visible agenda, rotating facilitators, the year-end celebration, the dream list, our annual retreat, the quote wall, or one of our favorite phrases, “When we meet, we must eat!”

Causes We Care About

Each year, OPG donates a percentage of our revenue to a nonprofit nominated by our staff and voted on by our clients, families, and friends. Here are some of the organizations we have supported:

Sandy Hook Promise

Sandy Hook Promise is a national nonprofit organization founded and led by several family members whose loved ones were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. Based in Newtown, Connecticut, its intent is to honor all victims of gun violence by turning tragedy into a moment of transformation. By empowering youth to “know the signs” and uniting all people who value the protection of children, we can take meaningful actions in schools, homes, and communities to prevent gun violence and stop the tragic loss of life.
